Biowerx Consulting is owned and operated by Dr. Russell Pillers. Dr. Pillers background is extremely diverse, ranging from carpentry and steel fabricating to physiological research, medical device development, optical engineering and Department of Defense project management. He was born in raised in a frontier town in Nevada with a population of 2500 people. Living there, Dr. Pillers skills in construction, carpentry and welding grew out of the natural environment of 'see a need, fill a need.' This was when he acquired his most prominent skill, the ability to teach himself the skills he needed to be able to create. Dr. Pillers then went on to complete a Bachelor's degree in Computer and Electrical Engineering. Upon graduation, he secured his first professional job with a small start-up biomedical company that developed the worlds first disposable endoscope. Being a small venture, there were a multitude of areas Russell could stretch to fill, including mechanical engineering, optical engineering, graphics design, technical writing, manufacturing engineering and FDA manufacturing compliance. During that time, the thought of pursuing a Doctorate in Biomedical Engineering first originated. Russell's Doctorate focused on physiology, cell and molecular biology, fiber optics and high density integrated circuits. His dissertation focused on optics after an initial two years working on animal model research in dementia.. Dr. Pillers' dissertation work created an entirely new paradigm of tissue imaging - that of Non-Scanning, Confocal Endoscopy. Upon graduation, Dr. Pillers became the on-site lead of a 'skunk-works' type of group at Sierra Nevada Corporation, a prime defense contractor located in Northern Nevada. After a time, Dr. Pillers was tasked to be the technical lead of a group just beginning to work on medical data communication for the battlefield. For the next nine years, he led the effort in both vision, technical design and systems engineering for the effort to develop what ultimately became 'Tactical Telemedicine'. During those years he became comfortable in the environment of Department of Defense R&D and acquisition. Ultimately, Dr. Pillers was responsible for all Business Development efforts for the concept resulting in many millions of dollars of funding. Dr. Pillers is now using his very broad skill-set in the environment of his own venture. He brings to his customers a decidedly extensive background, only some of which has been described here. He offers conceptualization, planning, design, engineering, fabrication, project management, education and business development. You can be assured that Dr. Pillers is far from a one-man enterprise. The range of his partners, contacts and external resources is rich, ensuring his customers receive the very best in project support. Dr. Pillers lives in Northern Nevada with his wife of 25 years and three children.
